Coachwhip

Coachwhip

While working out on our ~40 acres (pinyon-juniper habitat in central Colorado–~7000′), my husband spotted a Red Racer/Western Coachwhip.  By the time he could get the camera, all he could photograph was the tail-end disappearing under a shrub.  He described it as looking like it was wearing black fishnet stockings–each scale was darkly outlined.  “It moved faster than any snake I’ve ever seen”–a characteristic of the coachwhips.

A coachwhip got caught in some bird netting in my garden yesterday. We had to call animal control to come free it, since it tried to strike us each time we tried to free it.
In the meantime, I was able to take a few photographs. In 30 years here, I had never seen one before. Probably never will again!

I saw a Coachwhip today on my property for the first time. It was very fast, long and an attractive snake. I am glad to see he is on the job hunting rodents, hope he has lots of friends.
